"Self-Portraits"
|
Exhibition Text: These drawings were created to enhance the abilities to draw and experiment with different types of mediums. The artist used three types of mediums, but she focused more on graphite and ink in order to complete the self portrait series. There was also one piece that was done digitally using Microsoft Paint since the artist used the materials that were available for her. The set of drawings did not have any specific inspiration, however, a goal was implied which was to develop new skills in order to complete this series.

Process
The first thing that I had to do was to know what I wanted to create. I decided to create self-portraits for the project. I posed in front of a mirror and tried to remember my pose in order to draw myself. There were other drawings that were recreated using a photo.
Here is some of my process: |
|
Ink (All sizes are 22.86cm x 30.48cm)
Digital (Size: 20.32cmx30.48)
Pencil (Sizes: 22.86cm x 30.48cm)
ACT Components:
- The way that I was able to identify the cause and effect in my artwork were through three different mediums that I felt like experimenting with. Pen and digital art were not my forté since I rarelyreally worked with those two mediums because everytime I tried utilized those two, it messed up the balance of the picture. However, this helped me gain more experience.
- For this project, I didn't have an author or did much research. Nonetheless, these pieces were inspired by lines that created contrast between dark and light (ex. the face and the hair), and rhythm.
- A generalization that I came to know from the small amount of research was that the lines or detail into the pieces of art can make the viewer curious as to questioning what they are looking at and how they feel about the piece. Through my search of inspiration, I realized that rhythm helps the piece have more appeal to the audience.
- The central idea of the whole series of self portraits was to experiment with three out of seven elements of art which are: line, form, and value. Not only that, but I also came to experiment with some of the principles of art which are: contrast, rhythm, and value. Also, experimenting with ink, pencil, and digitally was also another central idea in order to expand my skills.
- An inference that I was able to make while searching for inspiration was that I enjoy the German Expressionism art movement. This movement insterested me due to the way that the lines and colors created emotions.
Reflection
For this project I decided to create self portraits. Throughout the process of the summer project, I got to increase my drawing skills. Back in my past experiences, I always used a scale to draw certain portraits of people. However, this project allowed me to draw without that support. Even though I considered using it, I just went to the difficult part of the project by doing it freehand. Drawing the pictures accurately was rather strenuous since I wanted my self portraits to display my face as it is displayed in the original photograph. I tried to avoid drawing inaccurately because I didn't want my portraits to look nothing like me or a really deformed recreation of myself. There were some portraits that I didn't particularly enjoy looking at because it didn't really look like me. However, these mentalities that I had in the project got me to advance in my drawing skills, since it is required for the career that I want to pursue. The struggles that I faced was drawing the mouth and the nose. Getting the shape of the nose and the mouth was a struggle in my way of completing this project. I also struggled creating my digital self portrait because since I don't have access to a drawing tablet, I had to use MS Paint. It was a really difficult task, however, I tried to create something out of the resources available to me. Blending and shading the self portraits was another difficulty that I encountered because I felt that they all weren't shaded enough and were somewhat splotchy. On the other hand, I had success with creating several portraits that I am proud about despite the struggle when creating them. Some of them (in my opinion) are aesthetically pleasing, which is another accomplishment of mine in this project.
