Grown Up

Starting Process |
Sketches |
At the beginning of the project, I was planning on creating a picture in a 1950s comic style. Getting the theme and connecting it to an art movement was a thing that held me down in the process of creating the piece. However, I ended up with the theme of growing up.
1). The first sketch was of me looking up with a pensive expression. This was for the thinking and reflecting one in transition to adulthood has to do and how they will overcome that change. 2). This is a sketch in which shows me with a smug face accompanied with dark makeup, as a way to show rebellion. 3). The last one was of me with a blank expression, but trying to say a statement of the same theme, rebellion, since I have piercings. At the end, I chose to mix my sketches and took my picture in order to capture those three mixes. |

Artist Inspiration
This piece was inspired by Andy Warhol and Pop Art. Andy Warhol was a successful magazine and ad illustrator. He became the leading artist of Pop Art in the 1960s. He created films, performance art, and video making. His repititive pieces and how he used color inspired my piece even though I did not repeat the same picture in my one piece,

Process and experemintation(cont.)
The first thing that I did was to desaturate the picture by pressing ctrl+shift+U. I then clicked the pencil tool with the size of 10px and 100% hardness. I made sure my background color was black and white. Then, I clicked the small option which is "quick mask". I then proceeded to cutting my face out of the picture. I clicked on the paint bucket tool and clicked inside the selection that I made and pressed Q in order to make a selection. After this I pressed the ctrl+delete in order to fill the background color with white. I also pressed ctrl+D to get rid of my selection. Then I pressed ctrl+J in order to make a copy of my selection. Next, I pressed 'filter' and then 'filter gallery'. I opened the 'sketch' folder and clicked on the 'halftone pattern'.
I chose size: 1 for the dots, and 40% for contrast. Then, I went to 'filter', 'sharpen', and selected 'smart sharpen'. I made the amount 500%, radius of 1 px, reduce noise at 0%, and remove noise at Gaussian Blur. I changed the blend mode to 'multiply. I pressed down the ctrl key and clicked the new layer icon in order to make another layer beneath my current layer. I got my new layer active and clicked the foreground color and began to find the color in which I want my layer to be. I pressed alt+delete to fill the background with the color of my picking. I clicked on the foreground color picker again so that I can find my skin color. I found this difficult so I opened one of my pictures and used the dropper to get my skin color. |
I went back to my piece and clicked on the pencil tool. Then, I began to paint in my skin. In order to get the white in my eyes, I pressed X and selected the pencil tool and colored in the white of my eyes. I proceeded with finding colors that I thought would be good for my theme, which was more mature colors.

Meaning
The piece is a representation of matureness. This focuses on the expectations that teens have. They are first treated as kids, but suddenly, they are abruptly introduced to the real world. The teen years are the most difficult due to the fact that one is still a kid, yet an adult. The facial expression shows a "Are you serious?" look as a way of questioning why we as teens are expected to make decisions that stress us out up to the point of being depressed because we may think that we're not prepared for the world of adults..
ReflectionAs a result, I extended my knowledge in using Photoshop CS6. I always saw the pictures of Andy Warhol and couldn't fathom how I would be able to create a similar piece to his. I've seen many of his work before knowing he did it. Through this, I learned more of him and the new tools of Photoshop. I encountered difficulties which were, finding a source of inspiration and a way of how to approach the studio. I was also discouraged with the way that my piece turned out. To me it seemed too simple, which was not what I wanted. However, I succeeded with finding the color scheme that fit my piece and how they each complimented eachother.

ACT Question
1). Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
Andy Warhol used pop-culture figures that were in the face of the beholder. He made a statement through his pieces despite not having a clear meaning. Although, I didn't use repitition as he always did, I used colors that stood out, yet didn't.
2) What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The overall approach that I can make out was that he wanted to remind the people of the changes and the elements that play.
3) What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I came with the conclusion that culture has a great influence when it comes to the constant changes that we as a society make out to be.
4) What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea was to show the huge transition that a teen has to go through in order to become an adult. As I said before, this is a drastic change, from being a kid and being dependent on their parent/guardians. then suddenly becoming independent.
5) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
I have concluded that Andy Warhol wanted to make a statement based on about portraying the events happening in his time era.
